The Kaplan Twins

The Kaplan Twins: Allie and Lexi Kaplan

In recent years, we have seen a visable shift in the art world, with the rise of social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr. The line between what is art and what is not, has been increasingly more blurred due to how we consume content on these platforms.

The Kaplan Twins’ (@The_Kaplan_Twins on Instagram) are a twin sister artist duo, that explores contemporary themes in pop culture. Their work tends to explore the complexities of life in the digital age; such as millennial culture, new forms of communication and the obsession with celebrity.  In their exhibition “Shit I Just Spilled Kombucha on my Yeezy’s”, The Kaplan Twins use easily recognizable symbols such as emojis and material goods such as Yeezys and Wonderbread and so on to critique and or celebrate the cultural significance of these material and or digital items.

“Their paintings remind us of Pop Art’s pioneer Andy Warhol, with his artistic exploitation of current objects such as the Campbell Soup and Marilyn Monroe. Now The Twins have taken that inspiration and created a new genre, Instagram Art – as Allie and Lexi title it. This new style’s growth is so shocking, sarcastic and provocative, causing us to wake up from an insta sleep to analyze who we are, what we created ,and where pop culture is heading to”.
